Special National Nurses Week Thank You

“Last year we almost lost the little nine-year-old next to me in this picture. It’s Nurses Appreciation Week, and to say “thank you” feels incredibly inadequate for how the nurses at Vidant Children’s Hospital cared for my son — and for all of us.

They gently turned him from one side to the other hundreds of times while he lay in a coma.

They monitored every vital, recorded every med.

They cleaned him up, only for him to get sick and need to be cleaned up again.

They dressed and redressed his wounds.

They were the brave ones who handled replacing his NG tube when he pulled it out — again.

They sang over him and prayed for him through long watches in the night.

They never complained.

They never left the room without asking if they could get us anything.

They answered our questions and were willing to just be present with us in the midst of our suffering.

This picture would not be possible, and that little boy would not be here, were it not for the nurses who faithfully and diligently ministered to our precious child for 48 days without fail.

Precious nurse friends, I type these words through tears. You know who you are, and I cannot thank you enough. I am praying for you in the midst of this season that I can only imagine is incredibly hard for you. Thank you so much for being there for me (and for all of us) in the seasons that are so very hard for us.

NURSES, YOU ARE INCREDIBLE. THANK YOU.”
